How to prepare your space for installing a motorized fabric roller blind

Motorized FABRIC BLINDS are an elegant and modern solution that combines comfort, functionality, and style in one package. The key to their flawless operation and perfect appearance lies in precise space measurement and choosing the right system. In this article, we'll guide you step by step through the entire measuring process - from planning the cabling to final installation.

Why is accurate measuring so important?

Precise measuring for a motorized fabric blind is essential to ensure smooth movement of the blind without obstructions, a perfect aesthetic result without visible mounting elements, and optimal blind functionality - including compatibility with control systems or smart home integration. Proper measuring also minimizes installation errors, saving both time and money on additional adjustments.

Motor placement and cable planning

The first step is deciding how the motor will be powered. The best option is a classic wired connection to your home’s electrical system using a 230V power source. Next comes the decision on the motor’s position and planning the cabling. It's important to determine which side of the window the motor will be installed, as this affects the cable route and connection to the power source.

If you're unsure about the type of control system you'll want to use - for example a remote control, a central control unit, or smart home integration - we recommend installing a universal five-core cable. This gives you maximum flexibility for future changes.

For those who prefer simplicity and want to save on electrical work, a battery-powered motor is an excellent choice. It eliminates the need for a fixed network connection and allows easy installation. However, you should keep in mind that the battery must be recharged regularly, depending on usage. Typically, a battery-powered motor is recharged once every three to six months.

Control options tailored to your needs

Motorized blinds can be controlled in several ways, each with its own advantages. The classic option is wall-mounted control via a push button. However, this becomes limiting when you want to control multiple blinds at once. In that case, a central control unit is recommended, allowing all blinds to be managed from one place.

For most households, remote control is the preferred solution — offering simple and intuitive use and the ability to set different control scenarios on the remote. If you plan to integrate your blinds into a smart home — such as Somfy, Loxone and others — it’s important to determine which central unit your home already uses. Choosing the right one ensures full compatibility and seamless operation.

We currently offer Home motors and Somfy motors with Zigbee technology, which allow easy integration into smart home systems (for example the Apple Home app on iPhone).

Advantages of Zigbee motors

Zigbee motors for blinds bring several advantages over RTS and io-homecontrol technologies:
  • Interoperability: Zigbee is an open standard, allowing easy integration with various smart home systems and devices from different manufacturers.
  • Energy efficiency: Zigbee devices are designed to consume less energy, ideal for battery-powered motors.
  • Mesh communication: Zigbee uses a mesh network, meaning devices can communicate with each other and extend signal reach, improving reliability and coverage.
  • Flexibility: Thanks to broad support from various manufacturers and devices, it's easy to expand and customize your smart home according to user needs.

Inlike RTS (a one-way protocol without feedback) and io-homecontrol (two-way but limited to specific ecosystems), Zigbee offers a more modern and universal solution.

Which installation method should you choose?

Every space is unique, so it's important to choose an installation type that best suits your requirements.

  • Wall mounting: This method is ideal when you want the blind to cover the entire window opening. The recommended overlap on each side is approx. 5–10 cm. The height is measured from the installation point down to the windowsill or floor.

  • Ceiling mounting: Ceiling installation optically enlarges the space and creates an elegant look. Telescopic brackets can be used for precise adaptation to the room.

  • Installation into a box or recessed ceiling: For minimalist design, installation in a box with revision cover is ideal. This installation type hides all technical elements and ensures a clean look and complete blackout.

Choosing the right fabric and planning the cabling

In previous articles, you’ve learned HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FABRIC BLIND MATERIAL AND COLOUR. For motorized blinds — especially large-format ones — fabric selection is critical. At Bematech, blinds can be manufactured in widths of up to 7–10 meters, which requires fabrics that are strong enough to resist deformation.

For perfect appearance and performance, we recommend choosing fabrics with OUR PATENTED ZOOMTECH® TECHNOLOGY, which ensures the fabric stays straight without any roller shaft sagging or fabric deformation even with very wide blinds. Thanks to our extensive fabric collection, you can choose from up to 680 fabrics in various colours, structures and patterns — which you can view in digitized form from the comfort of your home on our FABRIC COLLECTION PAGE.

The motor of a motorized blind is hidden inside the roller tube, contributing to its elegant design. When planning cabling, it’s important to consider where the cables will be placed and where holes will be drilled so they remain invisible and do not disrupt the space's aesthetics. Fortunately, you still have room for adjustment — each motor comes with at least a half-meter cable for easy connection.
